Lincoln Group board member Jeffrey Boutwell discussed his new book "Boutwell -- Radical Republican and Champion of Democracy" with LGDC members on Tuesday, Jan. 21. The video of that presentation is now available on the group's You Tube channel.

Jeffrey's ancestor, George Boutwell, is probably the most distinguished of President Abraham Lincoln's inner circle that you've never heard of. He was the first chief U.S. income tax collector, was at the center of efforts to abolish slavery, helped found the Republican Party, and framed the Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments to the U.S. Constitution, among many other achievements during a long political career. Under President Ulysses S. Grant, he went on to fight for racial and economic equality and served as Treasury Secretary in Grant's first term.

Following the presentation, members asked Boutwell questions that further explored his ancestor's history, hypothesized on how he would respond to current events, and how Jeffrey Boutwell first learned about his ancestor's connection to Lincoln.

The new biography is the first full-scale book about this largely forgotten but important figure.  To learn more about Jeffrey Boutwell and purchase his new book, visit his website here: https://www.jeffreyboutwell.com/
