Upcoming Lincoln Study Forum Discussion, February 20, 2021

Updated: Feb 18, 2021

Washington D.C.

The Lincoln Group Study Forum deep dives into Abraham Lincoln and his cultural heritage through books and discussion. The study forum meets monthly on Saturday at 10AM via Zoom and is open to all LGDC members. New participants are welcome. Anyone interested in attending as a guest can do so by contacting John O’Brien at jobrien3910@verizon.net.

Our next discussion meeting is on February 20, 2021. We will read and discuss How the South Won the Civil War: Oligarchy, Democracy, and the Continuing Fight for the Soul of America, by Heather Cox Richardson (Oxford University Press, 2020) through page 54.

The North may have prevailed in the Civil War, but Richardson argues this victory was ephemeral. The system that had sustained the defeated South moved westward and there established a foothold. Richardson's searing book seizes upon the soul of the country and its ongoing struggle to provide equal opportunity to all. Debunking the myth that the Civil War released the nation from the grip of oligarchy, expunging the sins of the Founding, it reveals how and why the Old South not only survived in the West, but thrived. How the South Won the Civil War takes a broader look at the kind of political paradox that Abraham Lincoln tried desperately to rectify during the Civil War and brings it up to the modern era. This is a critically important book that the Forum believes will help us better understand Lincoln's unfinished work and guide us in bringing his vision to citizens and leaders today.
