Recordings from the past two meetings are available now. Watch Ross Heller discuss his discovery of Abraham Lincoln’s 1858 time capsule. Heller fell into what turned out to be his personal ‘rabbit hole’ in June 2021. That’s when he bought a 100-year-old book: an obscure 1924 volume entitled: “In the Footsteps of the Lincolns.” Watch as Heller takes us through his journey of discovery.
Then you can watch Ed Epstein and David J. Kent discuss the 1864 election and the impact of the soldier vote. President Ed Epstein and immediate past president David Kent describe machinations that made the presidential campaign such an ongoing subject of fascination for students of Lincoln. Kent discussed the internecine political events within the Republican Party and how the Democrats committed political suicide at their nominating convention.
Epstein delved into historians' disagreement over whether Union soldiers voted overwhelmingly for Lincoln in 1864 out of support for their commander in chief or because of coercion and an ongoing effort to purge Democrats from the military.
If you're interested in learning more about this topic, you're in luck! Thanks to the interest of David J. Kent and the support of our members, there will be a follow-up to this event on October 29, 2024 for Lincoln Group members, at 6 pm on Zoom.
