The Lincoln Group of DC will return to live in-person programming beginning in October. And what a live event it will be! Join us for eminent Lincoln historian Ronald C. White, author of many revered books on Abraham Lincoln and Ulysses S. Grant. White will talk about his newest book, Lincoln in Private: What His Most Personal Reflections Tell Us About Our Greatest President. We'll also have some special gifts to welcome everyone back.
It's been a long year and then some since our last in-person event. Stymied by the pandemic, the Lincoln Group switched over to Zoom-based virtual meetings. Not only did we keep to our original monthly schedule of speakers, we expanded it, squeezing in more than we could in person. There were two huge benefits of going virtual:
We could reach our members now spread across the United States
We could attract stellar speakers previously unavailable to us because of the costs of distance or scheduling limitations
We cherish the participation of those remote members, so rest assured that we will continue with a virtual speaker series in the future.
But we also missed the social gatherings served by our monthly dinner meetings. Many local Lincoln Group members have limited access to virtual programming and enjoy meeting in person. So we will be going back to live events too. The exact schedule is yet to be determined as we'll attempt to bring both virtual and in-person events to our members. More on that as we move forward.
To get you started, here is our expected upcoming schedule. Put them on your calendar!
September 21: James Oakes on The Crooked Path to Abolition [Virtual via Zoom starting at 6 pm]
September 25: Our Annual Tour and Picnic Returns! More details to follow.
October 16: Ron White on Lincoln in Private [In-Person LUNCHEON at Maggiano's Restaurant (near the Friendship Heights Metro Station, starting at 11:30 am] NOTE that this is a Saturday luncheon, not our usual Tuesday dinner.
November 14-19: We'll see you at the Lincoln Forum in Gettysburg!
December: Was Lincoln Audacious, or Cautious? A special luncheon event at a date to be determined. Stay tuned for more details.
January 2022: To be determined
February 2022: Joint meeting with the CWRTDC featuring Allen Guelzo! [Expected to be In-Person; Details to Follow]
But there will be so much more!
In addition to the above, we'll be scheduling other events. Watch this blog for a special Zoom meeting to be held in August (yes, next month). We also have our monthly Study Forum - and we'll be picking a new book this month.
And for those paying attention, next year is the 100th Anniversary of the Dedication of the Lincoln Memorial. The Lincoln Group of DC is hot on the trail planning for a commemoration event in May of 2022.
