The Lincoln Group of DC's John T. Elliff Scholarship Fund continues to support Ford's Theatre teacher programs. Each year, the Lincoln Group provides $2000 from the fund. This is part of our ongoing mission to help "engage new generations in understanding his dedication to equality and liberty under law and his attitude 'with malice toward none, with charity for all.'"
The John T. Elliff Scholarship Fund was established soon after the passing of former LGDC president John Elliff. John had been a driving force for many years with the Lincoln Group, as well as serving on the boards of the Lincoln Forum and the Abraham Lincoln Association. He was particularly fond of working with Ford's Theatre, where he frequently volunteered as a docent. The Fund was specifically designed to further John's commitment to Ford's Theatre and its educational programs, especially those that provide teachers with the needed background and schools to reach their students.
This year the Lincoln Group of DC is happy to support two of Ford's Theatre's teacher programs.
The Civil War Washington program helps teachers discover historical sites in and around Washington to share with their students. Participants visit the Frederick Douglass home, Tudor Place, Ford's Theatre, and President Lincoln's Cottage while learning new strategies and resources to apply in the classroom. This program runs from July 9-14, 2023.
In Set in Stone: Civil War Memory, Monuments, and Myths, participants examine the changing views on monuments and memory. They will learn how Washington's transformation during the war laid the groundwork for reconstruction, the role of contraband camps, the growth of Anacostia, and much more. This program runs from July 23-28, 2023.
Each program can accommodate 20 teachers of grades 3 through 12. Applications are being accepted now through April 10, 2023. See the links for each program for more details and how to apply.
The Lincoln Group is proud to honor John Elliff's legacy through this annual scholarship funding, and Ford's Theatre acknowledges our contribution with the following notice on each program page:
Ford’s Theatre Summer Teacher Institutes are made possible with support from the John T. Elliff Scholarship Fund of the Lincoln Group of DC.
The Lincoln Group will continue to provide this $2000 award each year. If you would like to contribute to the John T.
