One of the great benefits of joining the Lincoln Group is the chance to take part in our book study forum, which holds meaty monthly discussions about books analyzing Abraham Lincoln and his era.

Now is a particularly good time to join because the study forum at its next two-hour session on the late morning of Saturday, March 15, is going to start a discussion of Manisha Sinha's recent book, The Rise and Fall of the Second American Revolution: Reconstruction 1860 to 1920. In the volume, University of Connecticut history professor Sinha argues that the Reconstruction era began with Lincoln's election in 1860 and ended with the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution in 1920, which granted women the right to vote.

Along the way, Sinha says, the battle between the forces of democracy and reaction raged on several fronts--in labor battles, and in Indian wars in the western U.S., and in the establishment of overseas colonies, primarily through the Spanish-American War in 1898.

It's a provocative read that has drawn lots of attention.

The March 15 session will run from 10 a.m. to noon eastern time, via Zoom, so members across the country can partake. The study forum will take up the first chapters of Sinha's book this month, with ensuing sessions over the next three months analyzing the rest of the book.

Henry Cohen, copy editor of the Lincoln Forum Bulletin, will facilitate the discussions. He has published about 30 book reviews relating to Lincoln and his era. For 28 years, Henry was the book review editor for The Federal Lawyer. Henry is a retired legislative attorney with the Congressional Research Service at the Library of Congress.
