Now is your chance to play an active role in the Lincoln Group of DC Board of Directors. Come join us!
The Lincoln Group of DC has been in existence since 1935. During that time, we have had some outstanding leadership step up to serve as officers and board members. The current board terms end in May 2024; and while many of us have played some role on the board for several years, it is critical that we continue to bring in new members and their new ideas. Now is your opportunity to contribute your thoughts and your ideas to future programs of the LGDC.
We are also in the process of revising our Bylaws to expand the size of the board. Originally the board consisted of the elected officers - President, anywhere from two to three Vice Presidents, a Membership Secretary, a Recording Secretary, and Treasurer. To that we include on the board our Newsletter Editor and now our Webmaster. As the Lincoln Group continued to grow in scope in recent years, we expanded the board to formally include the Immediate Past President and several Board Members-At-Large. With the revised Bylaws, we will add up to three new At-Large Board Members. There also is at least one Vice President position available, and I'm slated to step down at the end of my term as President.
Long-time members know that we are an extremely active organization, the most active in the country. Despite the DC in our name, we are a national organization, with members all over the country. Members represent states as far away as Washington (the state), California, Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Maine, and of course, along with many more, the entire DMV region (District, Maryland, Virginia, and let's toss in West Virginia and Pennsylvania to that local mix).
Our programs include monthly dinner and/or Zoom meetings, battlefield tours, a monthly book study forum, a world-class website, a quarterly newsletter, and many special programs. The Lincoln Group of DC organized and emceed the Lincoln Memorial Centennial program in 2022, building off previous celebrations of the 1st and 2nd Inauguration reenactments. Our members range from deep Lincoln scholars and authors to Lincoln aficionados of all backgrounds, from lawyers to scientists to government workers to professors to accountants to psychologists to self-employed consultants and writers to, well, just about anyone else. We welcome people from all walks of life. The only requirement is your desire to learn more about Abraham Lincoln, both in his relevance to his own time and our own.
The Lincoln Group of DC is so well-respected in the Lincoln community and region that we received the prestigious Wendy Allen Award from the Lincoln Forum in 2022.
As with all groups, new members and new leadership are critical to continuing to make LGDC interesting and relevant in today's changing world. Joining the board now gives the benefit of learning from established board members while also giving you the opportunity to introduce new ideas. While some positions have specific responsibilities (e.g., lining up speakers), in practice the board works collaboratively.
If you are interested in joining the board, or even volunteering ideas and efforts as a non-board member, please reach out to me at davidjkent.writer@gmail.com or simply send a note through the comment section of this post on the website.
I look forward to hearing from you.
